Re-development of Trout Farm: Priority 4.7 project to re-develop a Trout Farm in St Erth, thereby enabling production to increase to up to 50 tonnes of fish a year. Once production of trout is up and running the processing factory on site will be re-opened.

Carrick District Council : Priority 2.2 project to improve Falmouth’s town centre. The Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) is a package of heritage grants designed to bring extra income into Falmouth by making the town more attractive to visitors and thereby capitalising on the new National Maritime Museum which is due to open in 2002. The project has been developed by Carrick District Council in a bid to encourage investment in Falmouth by improving the condition of historic buildings in the commercial heart of the town between the Moors and the docks.

Restormel Borough Council : Priority 2.2 project is a high-profile scheme which will act as a prime example of how Cornwall’s private sector can work alongside the public sector to develop a project with major benefits for all involved. The project will see a range of high-quality facilities built by next summer and involves the Borough Council, surfing organisations, education bodies and private business joining forces to enhance the beach’s already high reputation among surfers and other beach users. The surfing centre has been heralded as the first step in a £20 million programme to breathe new life into Newquay.

Vocational and Short Courses Scheme
Duchy College Priority 4.4 project to train 16,000 farmers and farm workers. The innovative project will provide technical and development programmes for people working in all land-based industries. Employers will be able to claim wage subsidies while their employees are on development programmes. Grants will also be available to contribute to the cost of employing relief workers while participants are attending training events. The six-year project is expected to provide training for 16,000 people and benefit 5,000 businesses

Development of Strategy for the Red Meat Sector
South West Quality Meat Priority 1.4 project to develop the competitiveness of the red meat sector. It will address the processing and marketing aspects of the red meat sector and the further development of regional brands to sell Cornish produce. The study will also examine electronic identification of animals, thereby increasing consumer confidence in a quality brand, and will also look at how to develop local collection and distribution networks to reduce the amount of ‘food miles’ involved in meat production. This would not only reduce lorry movements within the Westcountry but would cut down on the sort of mass movements of animals, which have been blamed for spreading the foot and mouth virus so rapidly across the UK.

St Agnes ‘No Take Zone’ (NTZ) Demonstration Trial
Cornwall County Council –: Priority 4.7 project to establish a ‘no take zone’ in one of Cornwall’s shellfisheries. It is the first of its kind in Europe and was set up in 1997 by St Agnes Quay Fishermen’s Association, who designated part of their usual shellfish fishing grounds as a closed area where the fishermen have agreed not to fish in an attempt to conserve crab and lobster stocks.

The Objective 1 fisheries grants will provide three years’ funding to help the project to assess its effectiveness as a tool for helping inshore fisheries stocks around the coast. If it is a success, there is a chance further areas will be designated by fishermen.
The project will employ a project officer to raise awareness, tagging and measure lobsters and promote the No Take Zone debate in Cornwall.

Processing and Marketing of Fishery and Aquaculture: Priority 4.7 project to upgrade its Newlyn based factory. Which will include the installation of a wall, ceiling cladding to ease cleaning, a new entrance door for the staff changing area, and the removal of all surface pipes. It will help maintain six jobs, possibly creating one if the factory trade and turnover increases, and will improve the service provided to customers.
