Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly cruise to prosperity

Destination Southwest was officially launched on Tuesday 5th March at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

Destination South West is a £233,000 innovative new partnership initiative to triple the number of cruise ships visiting Devon and Cornwall to over 160 and to increase spend of £2.2m for the Devon and Cornwall economy by 2005.

The ports of Isles of Scilly, Penzance, Fowey, Falmouth, Plymouth, Dartmouth and Torbay together with local authorities, the Eden Project, Abbey Gardens in Tresco and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, have won European Objective One and Two funding with additional funding from the South West Regional Development Agency, to put Destination South West firmly on the world cruise industry’s map.

The successful funding bid for the project was written by Cornwall Enterprise on behalf of the Partnership and it includes a three-year marketing campaign will provide a huge opportunity for local traders, attractions and guides to benefit from increased sales. 50% of visiting cruise ship passengers are known to explore the town, whilst others will choose to take a ship’s organised tour excursion.

Destination Southwest aims to become a leading destination in the world of cruising. Director of Cruise Operations, Bob Harrison, says, “Research has shown that each passenger who disembarks spends at least £36.00 per day ashore. Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are determined not to be left out of this lucrative growing market. Our vision is that passengers will become our guests and leave as friends, hopefully to return time and time again!”

To ensure that the vision becomes a reality, workshops will be organised for the cruise related tourist industry, to enable them to better understand the market and get the best out of a cruise ship visit.
