New refrigeration unit brings great prospects

The Flushing based fishermen’s co-operative, Flushing and Falmouth Fishermen Ltd, has been granted an Objective One fisheries grant for a new refrigeration unit on Flushing Quay.

This vital piece of equipment will ensure fish landed, day or night, can be kept at the correct temperature to keep the fish fresh and maintain its quality.

The Flushing and Falmouth Fishermen Ltd is a co-operative and was established in the 1970’s. The co-operative currently has about 10 members of current and retired fishermen.

The new refrigeration unit will be able to maintain consistent temperatures and will operate on environmentally friendly CFC free refrigeration. The project will help to sustain 14 fishermen’s jobs from flushing and help ensure fishermen gain the best possible price for their fish. In addition, by keeping fish fresh, the customer has a better chance of good fresh quality fish on his or her plate.

Alison Elvey, Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager has stated, “I hope all of Cornwall’s fishing ports, however big or small, benefit from Objective One Fisheries grants to upgrade their facilities, or provide vital facilities to improve fish quality. This fishing co-operative will gain great value from having a cold store to maintain its fish so it can be landed anytime and still maintain it’s freshness before being transported to Newlyn market.”

Mr Hitchman, from Flushing and Falmouth Fishermen Ltd, commented, “The refrigeration is up and running satisfactorily. Thank you very much to South West PESCA Ltd for help in obtaining grant, we would have struggled without help with the paperwork.”
