National challenge for Cornwall's finest cheesemakers

Cornish Brie, Cornish Garland and Cornish Blue cheeses, all hand-made on Cornish farms using the county’s finest milk, will be out to prove that Cornwall leads the field when it comes to quality, speciality cheeses. Cornish cheeses will be heading the challenge from the West Country in the annual Waitrose British Cheese Awards, vying with more than 750 British cheeses to bring the cheese “Oscars” back to Cornwall this weekend.

Cheeses from Cornwall will be among a selection of the West Country’s finest traditional and new cheeses acting as ambassadors for the region at the event, held this year in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. The West Country will have its own branded area in the cheese market, where visitors to the three day show can enjoy the taste, complexity and flavour of the region’s finest farmhouse cheeses.

Two special tutored tasting events, focusing on Cornish cheese and beer, will be held in Chipping Campden Town Hall on Saturday September 28 and Sunday September 29. In “Cutting Edge Combinations – Cheese and Beer from the West Country” Catherine Mead, who produces the award winning Cornish Yarg (winner of Best Added Flavour award at last year’s British Cheese Awards), will be selecting the best of the region’s cheeses to match beers from Cornwall, including Wolf Rock, an organic beer made on the Lizard, and Sharp’s Eden Ale, made in Rock, North Cornwall.

The cheeses and beers will be accompanied by breads by Gloucestershire bakery, Authentic Breads, and award winning chutneys from The Tracklement Co, in Wiltshire.

Carol Trewin, Cornwall Manager of Taste of the West which is organising the tutored tasting and West Country cheese displays, said that the British Cheese Awards were the perfect venue to display the excellence of the region’s specialist cheese makers.

“This three day event will allow Cornish cheese makers to show that they are at the forefront of the revolution that has been taking place in British cheese making,” she said.

“The county’s cheese can justifiably claim that they are among the best in the world. Cornwall produces more than 27 cheeses in a wide variety of styles, including traditional hard cheeses, softer continental style cheeses and top class blue cheeses.”

Last year more than 10,000 enthusiasts flocked to the British Cheese Awards to see, sample and buy the cheeses on display. The British Cheese Awards mark the start of British Cheese Week, which runs from Saturday September 28 to Sunday October 6.
