Objective One helps business overcome the skills gap

A project to help Cornish employers overcome skill gaps amongst their staff is to get over £1.6 million from Objective One.

Modern Apprenticeships for All is a three-year scheme that will give more than 2,000 people a chance to carry out on-the-job training and earn new NVQ qualifications.

The project will have a focus on Information Communications Technology (ICT) skills but employees will be able to train in over 40 occupational areas.

The project has been developed by PROSPER in recognition of the fact that many small and medium sized firms can not afford the time and resources for sending employees out of the workplace for training.

Project manager Cathie Helgesen said: “This project is great news for both employers and employees. For an employer it means you can train many more members of staff.

“Training will help make sure you get the most out of your staff and that there are no weaknesses in your firm.

“For employees it means you are less limited in terms of learning new skills, giving you better prospects and better potential. This is all about lifelong learning – and giving everyone a chance to benefit.”

Modern Apprentices for All is not just limited to people already in employment. Firms will also be able to recruit new staff for training as long as they have not been unemployed for six months or longer.

The project follows a successful pilot scheme and will be run by the new Devon and Cornwall Learning and Skills Council.

Employers will have to make a contribution to the cost of training but a significant contribution will come from the European Social Fund money. For more information on the scheme, contact Cathie Helgesen on 01209 312600.

Over the course of the project, Modern Apprentices for All will get a grant of just over £1,624,000 from the European Social Fund. Match funding of over £1,880,000 from public sources and £352,000 from the private sector will give a total project value of nearly £3.86 million.
