Major conference plans for prosperity
The role of the planning process in delivering economic growth in Cornwall comes under the spotlight next week during a major one-day conference.
Called ‘Planning for Prosperity’ and organised by the Cornwall Business Partnership, the conference will explore how the public and private sector can best work together to deliver the quality physical environment necessary for the growth of the Cornish economy, especially in the context of the Objective One European funding programme.
The conference is being supported by the South West Regional Development Agency, Cornwall County Council, the Government Office for the South West and Objective One.
Thelma Sorensen, chairman of the Cornwall Business Partnership, said: “Objective One is creating huge opportunities in Cornwall and stimulating a great deal of activity in which the planning process has a crucial role to play.
“The aim of the conference is to ensure that there is a greater understanding between the public and private sectors about each other’s problems and expectations. This will reduce the unnecessary misunderstandings that can cause delay in the planning process.”
Carleen Kelemen, Objective One deputy programme director, who will be addressing the conference, said: “It’s important to ensure that the investment going on in Cornwall is not delivered at the expense of the environment, which is why the conference will include presentations on sustainable design and development, both of which underpin the aims of Objective One.”
Stephen Bohane, Cornwall Head of Operations for the South West Regional Development Agency, said: “The RDA is working in partnership with a wide range of public and private sector organisations across Cornwall on a number of key regeneration projects. This conference is very timely and gives all of us the opportunity to share best practice.”
The conference takes place on Monday, July 22 at the Tolvaddon Energy Park at Camborne, itself a model of high quality sustainable development, which was jointly funded by the RDA and Objective One.
