Bringing Green Futures to Cornwall's communities

European funding has been approved for a project by practical conservation charity BTCV to help Cornwall’s community groups improve their quality of life and local environment.

The £143,000 Cornwall Green Futures project will build on work done previously under BTCV’s Global Grants scheme – helped by a grant of just over £64,000 that is being provided by the European Social Fund.

BTCV’s Cornwall Community Project officer Guy Doncaster said: “The aim of the scheme is to provide grants of up to £10,000 to enable community groups to develop local projects that can help people raise their economic potential and provide environmental enhancement.

“Because we already have funding from other bodies, such as the National Lottery’s Peoples Places fund, we can therefore provide grants that are already pre-matched, so that community groups do not have to go through the process of finding other sources of finance.”

BTCV is also able to support groups with the grant application process, training and provide mentoring support during project development. Cornwall Green Futures will run for two years and should help 160 beneficiaries, with more than 60 progressing into work or training.

Projects already funded include a woodland scheme in St Levan developing traditional green woodworking craft skills and a wildlife friendly community garden at Probus. Potential projects can also include the use of alternative technology to renovate a community building or the creation of pocket parks and sensory gardens.

Any Community Groups who are interested in developing an environmental project through Cornwall Green Futures can contact Guy Doncaster on 01326 377173 or email G.Doncaster@btcv.org.uk.
