RDA Appoints new European Programmes Director
Final preparations are being completed by the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) to manage more than £750 million of European Union investment in South West England over the next six years.
Today (Monday) saw the appointment of Phil McVey as the South West RDA's Director of European Programmes. Phil will work with partners across the region to oversee and manage the distribution of around £470 million of EU Convergence structural funds in Cornwall and £170 million of EU Competitiveness funding across other parts of South West England. The region's rural economy will also benefit from £152 million of European investment as part of the Rural Development Programme for England.
Convergence is the successor to the previous Objective One programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and will be launched later this year. Many partners have taken an active role in widespread consultations over the past two years to research and agree the main targets for Convergence investment which will have the greatest impact upon Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly's growing economy.
The agency's role will be to work alongside partners to ensure the effective distribution of the EU funding and to see that investments align with and support the objectives of South West England's regional and local economic strategies.
Phil McVey has been working for the South West RDA for the past 12 months in an interim capacity leading up to this permanent appointment. Previously, Phil worked for Government Office for the South West in a number of posts including Head of European Social Fund, Deputy Director for Rural Affairs and Assistant Director for Devon and Cornwall. He also spent nearly two years from 2003 working as an adviser on structural funds to the Czech government.
Phil McVey said: "There is a massive opportunity ahead to spur the development of the South West economy, especially in Cornwall, through these sizeable sums of European investment. My job will be to ensure that the right economic opportunities are identified and the investments targeted in the best way.
"Partnership working is critical to success, and I am delighted to be able to build on a range of very strong relationships across the region in taking this important role forward. Many organisations, partnerships and individuals have already been able to influence and help direct the course for the Convergence, Competitiveness and Rural programmes, and I am determined for that spirit of co-operation and shared interest to continue in the years ahead."
Phil McVey was born in Cornwall and still lives there today. He will be based in the South West RDA's Truro office and will work closely alongside the RDA's new Director for Cornwall, Theo Leijser, whose appointment was confirmed earlier this month and who takes up his post in November.
