Unlocking Cornish Potential business award support
The Unlocking Cornish Potential project is celebrating great success at the 2008 Cornwall Business Awards.
Of the 11 awards that went to Cornish-based businesses, Unlocking Cornish Potential support was behind nine of them.
Unlocking Cornish Potential received Objective One ESF (European Social Fund) investment and is run by Cornwall College via the Combined Universities in Cornwall. It places graduates with businesses and provides support for both the graduate and the business. Its success was highlighted at the business awards.
Allyson Glover, Unlocking Cornish Potential project coordinator, said: “When Unlocking Cornish Potential began the question was – was there the appetite among businesses for this scheme? We now have businesses queuing up for graduates and the benefits have now been emphasised by the UCP backing that is behind companies winning these awards.”
In the four years since UCP began 234 graduates have been placed with 149 companies. Of those more than 70% are retained by the business once the UCP project ends. 56% of the graduates placed are from Cornwall (based on their secondary school education).
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One Partnership, said: “This highly successful project is all about giving people the choice to remain in Cornwall for quality education and quality employment. Alongside that it adds value to businesses via fresh graduate knowledge. Unlocking Cornish Potential has delivered its aims in spades.”
Awards won by companies which have benefited from UCP support were:
