St Mellion hosting Business Needs and Support Exhibition

The second annual St Mellion Business Needs and Support Exhibition is due to take place on Wednesday May 21st.

Organisers hope the event, which will run from 10am to 5pm at St Mellion International Golf Club, will surpass the popularity of last year's inaugural exhibition which attracted hundreds. Like last year it is due to be opened by Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Partnership Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Ms Kelemen will also present at lunchtime, posing the question 'Is Cornwall ready to maximise the opportunities of the global knowledge markets?' She said: "When Objective One started in 2000, the Cornish economy was in a very poor state. The 'patient' had suffered from decades of decline with little prospect of a recovery. Today after eight years of European investment, digital access and the emergence of the Combined Universities in Cornwall, including the Peninsula Medical School and the iconic Eden Project and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall, the 'patient' is in robust health and the economy has seen its fastest rate of growth in the last 30 years. And in the face of the financial credit crunch and increasing energy costs, confidence amongst Cornish businesses remains high.

"We stand at the beginning of a new European investment programme, Convergence. By the end of this Programme, in 2015, will we be equipped to maximise the opportunities of the global knowledge markets and fill the gaps left in the post-industrial era?"

The exhibition, which will run from 10am to 5pm and is free to enter will include more than 75 exhibition stands and a comprehensive list of professional guest speakers.

Organiser Regan Bailey said: "We hope to attract more than 1,000 people to this year's show. We have already had a great response from the business community and this is turning into an event that should not be missed."
