Somar International Limited Expands

With high energy consumption being one of the major problems facing industry today, intelligent motor controllers developed by a rapidly growing Truro company are making a powerful impact in more than 70 countries across the world.

Queen's Award winner Somar International Limited, which employs 21, is expanding from Newham Industrial Estate to Threemilestone Business Park and taking on three new members of staff.

Founded by Peter Campbell and Ian Wrigley, the company built on more than a decade of research in the field of energy efficiency to develop the unique Powerboss range of controllers, which intelligently monitor motor.

Helped by Business Link Devon and Cornwall's ICT Advisory Service, Somar International is now integrating its systems to launch an online learning system for its huge distributor network in 73 countries. "Our distributors are based all over the globe and we needed a way in which we could train them without the hassles of traveling to the UK and obtaining visas from certain countries," explained office manager Kate Farrell. "Business Link IT adviser Mike Robertson was my first port of call as he doesn't use any jargon or 'blind me with science'! He started the ball rolling by contacting his network of associates and has been involved every step of the way. After a long research phase we are now launching our web-based solution that will provide online commercial and technical training for distributors and allow us to monitor and evaluate them, wherever they may be in the world. Because of the wide variations in computer and Internet specifications used by the distributors, initially it will be a two-tier system. When appointed, a distributor will be given a password that gains access to either an advanced, multimedia-rich version or a basic delivery. A third tier of training via a CD ROM will be coming soon. The new system will also help us to provide tailored training at the right level when our distributors are invited to attend workshops in Truro."

Somar International has been supported by Business Link to become recognised as an Investor in People and has also received help in the areas of export and finance. "The company is growing rapidly and this new IT system is essential to support our growth," added Kate. "The support we have received from Business Link and the ICT Advisory Service has been instrumental in helping us to develop the business."
