Finance Cornwall Helps Couple To Sell Quality Local Meat

Whether looking for a simple tasty banger or the finest cut of prime steak, access to quality locally produced meat at everyday prices became easier for businesses and consumers in West Cornwall this week, with the opening of a new butchers shop specialising in local produce, made possible with the help of investment support from Finance Cornwall.

On Monday 18th July Stephen Pearce and his fiancée Cathy Henshaw proudly opened their new business 'Cornwall Quality Meats' on the Longrock Industrial Estate near Penzance. Operating both a trade and retail butchery, the couple hopes that they will be able to meet the growing consumer and trade appetite for completely traceable Cornish meat.

After working for 20 years as a butcher, Stephen Pearce already knows how to keep the public coming back time and again, with more than 20 of his own sausage varieties which have previously won him the much coveted title three times over of 'Best Sausage in the South West'.

In 2001, Stephen's secret recipe for his plain pork sausages won him the second prize in the national finals of the best sausage competition and once again this year, Stephen is hoping to fly the Cornish flag at the Great Britain finals at London's Hilton Hotel in December, when he will be battling it out against nine of the other best sausage makers in the country.

A £42,000 investment package, supported by £15,000 from Finance Cornwall, the Truro based business finance company, has enabled Stephen and Cathy to start up their new business venture by leasing a retail unit and fitting out the new butchers shop with everything that needed to offer a first class quality service.

Stephen Pearce said: "With my 20 years of experience in the butchery trade I appreciate that quality is the key to success when it comes to attracting new customers and more importantly keeping them coming back for more. Local sourcing is increasingly becoming an important part of the buying decision for members of the public and also the hospitality trade who appreciate the taste and marketing advantages of producing their dishes using the freshest and finest of Cornish ingredients. West Cornwall has a thriving tourist industry and I hope that the high quality and service that Cornwall Quality Meats offers will be a big hit with local hotels, pubs and restaurants. Starting up our own business has been really exciting but also really challenging, which is why we were delighted that Finance Cornwall came on board and provided us with a vital injection of finance to help get the new business up and running."

Mike Wall, Finance Cornwall Business Loan Fund Manager said: "Cornwall Quality Meats already has the major asset of having an award winning butcher at its helm and I'm sure that this will stand the new business in good stead, to attract and keep retail and trade customers coming though the doors. New businesses can often find it difficult to get all of the finance in place to get their enterprise off the ground, which is exactly where we can make a real difference, by forming an important part of the funding jigsaw. Stephen and Cathy have got their butchery off to the best possible start and I wish them every success for the future."

Cornwall Quality Meats is located on the Longrock Industrial Estate near Penzance and is open from 8am to 5.30pm between Tuesday and Saturday. Businesses interested in finding out about the services that the butchery offers to the trade should call 01736 366306.
