School Staff Supported, Involved And Valued
A Cornish school that takes pride in making staff feel supported, involved and valued has been recognised as an Investor in People. Germoe Community Primary School, which employs a team of 11, in the village of Germoe near Helston, has been supported through the Investors in People process by Business Link for Devon and Cornwall.
The school of 59 pupils, aged 5-11, committed to the Investors in People standard in September 2004, as part of an ongoing drive to raise its performance by focusing on the training needs of all staff. Germoe Community Primary School also sought external recognition for good practices that have helped the school to build a reputation for an open and inclusive style of management.
Headteacher Ian Fellows says: "We are delighted to be successfully assessed against the Investors in People standard. Working with Business Link, we have gained considerably from the process. More of our staff have become involved in the running of the school and we continue to extend to all staff, including teachers, teaching assistants, mealtime assistants and administrative staff. We are now much more of a community. Investors in People has brought the whole school together, sharing our ethos of being warm, friendly and welcoming, not just for the children but for staff and parents."
The culture of training and teambuilding has brought benefits to all areas of school life. The most recent OFSTED report praises Germoe Community Primary School for "the quality of relationships and family atmosphere" and notes that pupils have made good progress, particularly in english and mathematics.
Staff at all levels have opportunities to develop their careers and to extend expertise by pursuing external courses. Teaching assistant Maggie Harrison, for example, has recently completed the NVQ for her role, while her colleague Charity Wilson is about to leave Germoe to pursue a post graduate certificate in education, with a view to a career in teaching. Another teaching assistant Denise Rusga has recently completed a programme to improve strategies for coping with behavioural problems. Mr Fellows has been able to compile a register of gifted and talented pupils after attending a Primary Leadership programme.
In recommending recognition as an Investor in People, assessor Jenni Brady noted: "There is a very open and approachable management style apparent. People feel supported, involved and valued."
