£6.3 Million Project Approved For Cornish Dairy Farmers

A new Cornwall Enterprise project, Dairy Collect, is preparing to receive applications for grant funding from Cornish Dairy Farmers. £2,293,600 of Objective One, EAGGF and Defra funds have been secured to support infrastructure improvements on Cornish dairy farms linked to the rationalisation of milk collection and transportation.

Dairy Collect Manager Elizabeth Menmuir says: "This scheme is a really positive opportunity for Cornish dairy farmers. The transportation of produce is a national issue but the geography of Cornwall exacerbates this problem; with the support of Milk Link and Dairy Crest Direct we were able to demonstrate that the supply chain is working together to address some of the issues the Cornish dairy industry faces."

Specifically, investment eligible for funding (up to 40%) include:

Extension of on-farm storage of milk e.g. larger capacity bulk tanks, dairy extensions. The main aim of the project is to increase milk storage capacity on those farms currently on every day collection to move them onto every other day collection. Farms currently on every other day collection, where projected increases in milk volumes indicate a future lack of capacity (before the end of the Dairy Collect Scheme) will also be eligible to apply.
Improvement of farm access to facilitate access by larger milk collection tankers (routine maintenance will not be eligible for support).
Energy saving and reduction of pollution and recycling measures could also form part of some proposals.

The scheme, hosted by Cornwall Enterprise, was designed by Cornwall Agricultural Council Development Team in partnership with Milk Link and Dairy Crest Direct. The approval of Objective One investment was received at the beginning of August. The Dairy Collect team comprising of Elizabeth Menmuir, Scheme Manager, Rachael Chamberlayne, Scheme Facilitator and Clare Lea, Scheme Administrator took up their posts on 22 August and are now keen to hear from any interested farmers.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in the Cornwall Dairy Farm Collect Scheme through the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF).
