Organic Cricket? Neot Such A Batty Idea!

A Cornish cricket team, St Neot Taverners, near Liskeard, believe that their home field is the only certified organic cricket pitch in the country and to celebrate National Organic Week, 3-11 September; they are holding a home match against Cornwall's over '50s complete with organic tea on Tuesday 6 September starting at 1pm.

The Club's social secretary, Martin Davies, works for Organic South West, a Bodmin-based organisation promoting organic food and farming in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and he is keen to find out if their claim is true. "Our cricket pitch belongs to certified organic farmers Andrew and Graham Kent, who also play for the team," said Martin. "I don't know of any other organic cricket pitches but would like to hear from other teams if they have one. Sadly being organic doesn't seem to improve our cricketing skills but I am looking forward to the tea afterwards whether we win or lose!"

The Club has reorganised its annual fixture against Cornwall's over '50s to take place right in the middle of Organic Week, a national event organised by the Soil Association. Martin will be dishing up organic scones, cream and jam together with other delectable organic goodies.

Other events taking place during the week include an organic Slow Food lunch in Bodmin on Thursday 8 September and Organic South West are supporting the British Kite Surfing Association's Wave event at Watergate Bay, 9-11 September, where organic beach barbeques with 100 per cent Cornish meat will be served from 11am-4pm everyday. The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in Organic South West through the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF).
