Shrinking Violet No More

All aboard for Taste South East Cornwall - organisers announce the upcoming month long gastro-extravaganza in LooeMove over Padstow, Newquay and St Ives, Looe is preparing to show its foodie colours with a month long celebration of the area's produce and cuisine. Local producers, restaurateurs and businesses have come together to devise 'Taste South East Cornwall', a gastro-extravaganza running from 11 November to 11 December.

Organisers are putting together an extensive programme of events for each day of the month long initiative. These will include special menus at some of the region's best restaurants, cooking demonstrations and workshops. There will also be wine tastings, trips out to sea, two food fairs and guided walks over the region's moorland and coastal landscape.

The Festival website is already up and running with all the latest information, plus visitors can post comments or request email updates on events as they're confirmed.

"This is such a lovely and welcoming area and the local food is so spectacular," says Nick Barclay, Cornish celebrity chef and owner of Barclay House Hotel and Restaurant in East Looe. "The razzamatazz of places like Padstow and St Ives has somewhat eclipsed the Looe area until now, but we hope this month long celebration will change all that. By staging it in the quieter autumn season it will give locals and visitors a chance to re-discover the area and its food at their own pace, and find some great inspiration for Christmas eating."

The ambitious initiative, which is being backed by Bateman Financial Management and Cornwall Taste of the West, is the first of its kind in South East Cornwall. Through its success organisers aim to establish the area as a fine dining destination for both visitors and locals, which will help sustain year round business for restaurants, food and drink producers, tourism businesses, accommodation providers, local shops and services.

Local restaurants and pubs will be promoting special 'Festival menus' featuring innovative dishes made from local produce. Accommodation suppliers are being encouraged to develop and promote foodie short break packages, and major Christmas food fairs at Cotehele and Mount Edgcumbe will provide peak events during the month long celebration.

The promotion of Taste South East Cornwall will also benefit from the already high profile of its four main organisers - Nick Barclay of Barclay House Hotel and Restaurant, Nick Love of Trawlers on the Quay and Andrew Treleaven of the award-winning Treleaven's Luxury Cornish Ice Cream, all based in East Looe, plus Richard McGeown of Couch's Restaurant in Polperro.

"The more local involvement, the more successful Taste South East Cornwall will be," says Nick Love, who is also Secretary of the South East Cornwall Tourism Association. "We've already got a lot of local business support, but we're still keen to hear from any South East Cornwall enterprises interested in getting involved and reaping the benefits of this exciting initiative."
