South West Pesca Recruit New Fisheries Project Officer

South West Pesca Ltd, who facilitate the Objective One Fisheries Programme, have a new addition to the team. Robin Davies has taken over as the new Fisheries Project Officer.

In 1997 Robin gained an MSc in 'Shellfish Biology, Fisheries and Culture' from the University of Wales, Bangor after which he read for a PhD in Marine Biology from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Whilst at Galway Robin researched alternative methods of otter and beam trawling and worked aboard commercial trawlers fishing off the west coast of Ireland. After this he worked for the Irish Sea Fisheries Board (BIM) as an Inshore Fisheries Development Officer covering County Cork. During this time he helped oversee the introduction of a new inshore fisheries management plan and played an active role in fisheries research projects and surveys.

Robin's role at South West Pesca is to develop fisheries projects so that they can benefit from EU funding. He will assist fishermen, fish processors, merchants and port managers to fill in application forms, write business plans and provide the required information for submission to Defra. Robin will guide applicants throughout the application process until the project is completed.

At present priority is being given to projects that will improve fish quality, particularly on board fishing vessels. Recent trials conducted by Seafood Cornwall have proved the merits of using insulated plastic tubs to keep fish at a cooler temperature onboard. Fishermen are encouraged to apply for grants to purchase insulated boxes. Grants of up to 40% are available. If you would like to apply for a grant to purchase insulated bins, or have any other project ideas, please call Robin on 01872 270333.

Robin Davies, Project Officer of South West Pesca commented: "I am very pleased to have this opportunity to work with fishermen and processors throughout the county assisting them to secure funding for projects that will help to safeguard the future sustainability of the industry."

Clare Leverton, Programme Manager of South West Pesca added: "Robin has already helped several processors and fishermen with successful applications and will be visiting all ports in the near future to promote the grants."

Further information contact Clare Leverton, Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager on 01872 270333.

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in the fisheries programme through the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG).
