A Certain Jewel In The Autumn Arts Calendar

The Friends of the Royal Cornwall Hospital are marking their diamond anniversary this year, with a spectacular exhibition entitled 'Cornish Contemporary Art' at the Knowledge Spa in Truro from 7th to 25th November, culminating in a fundraising auction on Saturday 26th November.

In a move away from the fetes, raffles and coffee mornings, traditionally associated with supporters of local hospitals, the event, which has been sponsored by Penryn-based CAD Architects Limited, is set to be a major contributor to the Friends' formidable challenge of raising £60,000 this year.

Chairman, Helen Hough explains: "We wanted to do something a little bit different for our anniversary, not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness of the Friends and their work for the Hospital over the past 60 years." The success of the event will be down to the quality of works being exhibited and on offer for auction and the Friends are enjoying enviable success with some outstanding works of art from some of Cornwall's finest galleries and artists, already promised. Helen says: "We wanted to make the exhibition and auction a local affair, local artists and galleries supporting their local hospital. We've already got works by some of Cornwall's most renowned artists including Terry Frost and Kurt Jackson pledged for the event."

Sara Norrish, arts co-ordinator for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Cornwall Hospital, has been supporting the development of the auction with great excitement. "It's going to be a superb opportunity for the Friends and the hospital to engage with the local arts community. We have done a great deal over recent years, most recently under our TriArts banner, to increase the involvement of the arts within the Trust's hospitals and further develop relationships and partnership with local artists and galleries."

The Friends' Diamond Anniversary exhibition and auction is taking place in the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The exhibition will run from 7th to 25th November and will be open to view between 9 am and 5.30 pm Monday to Friday. The auction takes place on the afternoon of Saturday 26th November at 2.30 pm. For more information or to register for a copy of the auction catalogue (£3), phone 01872 222621 or visit the website which will be launched shortly at www.cornwall.nhs.uk/artauction.
