NEW SHOP VENTURE FOR ORGANIC FARMERS
Local organic farmers Dan and Josephine Symons are venturing into new territory this month with the opening of a local and organic food shop at Goonhavern Garden Centre near Truro.
Josephine, who has been working with a butcher for the past twelve months to learn traditional meat cutting skills, is looking forward to the big day. "We've been planning this for some time and know that there is an increasing demand from people for a great range of quality, locally produced food including vegetables and meat from our own farm."
The Symons family have owned Hendra Farm for over 35 years and converted to organic production in 1998. Josephine is adamant that Cornish farmers can meet the demands of discerning shoppers. "As farmers we have learnt to diversify to make a living, switching from dairy to beef production and horticulture when we went organic. Buying direct from the producer benefits everyone and we are very excited about this new venture. People want to be able to buy good food, knowing where it comes from without having to pay huge premiums for the organic label."
Organic South West (OSW) has supported the Symons by helping with their marketing and corporate identity. Traci Lewis, OSW manager says: "Cornish organic farmers are really prepared to try new things and respond to public demand but it isn't always easy to do everything. We've been delighted to help them develop this enterprise which will provide a shop window for a number of other local producers."
The new shop, 'on the table', will stock organic and local produce including geese for Christmas, meat and fresh vegetables from Hendra Farm, Cornish cheeses, dairy products, fresh breads and speciality local foods. Located at Goonhavern Garden Centre on the Newquay road near Truro, opening hours are 9am-5.30pm daily. For further information call 01872 573183.
