Objective One Investment For New Crab Processing Unit

The out-buiding before conversionObjective One investment of over £15,000 has been awarded to Kynance Cornish Crab, owned and run by Bernie Kessell of the Lizard.

Previously Mrs Kessell operated a small 'cottage industry' processing freshly caught crabs on a small scale from her cottage on the Lizard. The Objective One investment has helped finance the conversion of an out-building into a crab processing unit.

Mrs Kessell has been successfully processing freshly caught crab supplied by her husband and other boats from the Helford for several years. The dressed crab meat that she produces is of the finest quality possible and demand for the product is high. The new crab processing unit will enable her to keep up with the demand for her product.

The new crab processing unitBernie Kessell commented: "The Objective One grant has enabled us to expand and produce our product far more efficiently from our purpose built unit."

Clare Leverton of South West Pesca Ltd added: "Small businesses are very important in rural areas, providing skilled jobs and income to the economy. It is appropriate for Objective One to invest in the production of a high quality product which is linked to the high quality local environment."

The Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has invested in the Kessell crab processing unit through the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance Fund (FIFG).
