Cornwall And Isles Of Scilly Highlighted In Europe

The Objective One programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has been promoted throughout EU countries as part of a massive event in Brussels. The event, "Open Days - European Week of Regions and Cities", ran from October 9 to 12 and attracted 2,500 registered participants from 30 countries. This doubled the amount of participants from 2004 and this year speakers included Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Danuta Hubner, European Commissioner for Regional Policy.

Clare Morgan, media relations manager for the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Objective One Partnership, was a speaker at one of the 66 workshops. Miss Morgan gave a presentation on the programme's communications methods which included a description of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and many of the successful Objective One projects that are being used to create wealth in the region. This was complemented by a presentation by Maria Everttson, of Sweden, who presented her own region's communications methods.

Marcus Scheuren of the South West UK Brussels Office (SWUKBO) said: "This was the most useful presentation I saw. The presentations gave a useful insight from the structural funds practitioners/managing authorities in the region, which also helps us with our work here in Brussels."

Miss Morgan added: "This type of presentation is highly useful to the Partnership as it helps to highlight the good work going on in our region as well as showcasing Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Those at the presentation included representatives of Holland, Sweden, Greece, Austria and the Czech Republic and I have received interesting feedback following the talk."

This success follows hot on the heels of an event in Brussels, in September, featuring the Objective One flagship project Combined Universities in Cornwall. Then, representatives from across Europe were invited to hear how Cornwall is leading the way in the use of university-level education as a key driver for economic regeneration.
